“Marvin Macaraig, a health promoter at Access Alliance at the news conference, said “a lower city-wide default speed limit is a critical component in preventing traffic fatalities.”

“Last year in my own community, a 17-year-old was killed by a motorist as she crossed Danforth Avenue in a crosswalk with the right of way,” he said. “Her school is located on one of those arterial roads where the speed limit is 50 kilometres an hour.”

He also said it was critical that road safety efforts be prioritized in Scarborough, North York and Etobicoke “where it feels like the majority of these tragedies are happening.””
