Toronto.com: Toronto bike program brings mentors and newcomers together


A group of newcomer women in the Thorncliffe Park Drive area have recently taken up a recreational activity denied to them in their home country of Afghanistan – riding a bike.

“Men can do anything but for women … we wished we could do that too,” said Najia Zewari, explaining the many restrictions that women faced in her home country, including riding a bike.

She said the small group of women, joined by her husband, did it to gain confidence: for all it was their first time riding a bike.

“We had the resilience. We had survived many things. This bike riding was another struggle,” she said, remembering the “fun” times they had learning to balance on two wheels.
